The Karate Kid is a 2010 American martial arts drama film written and directed by Harald Zwart. The screenplay was adapted from Robert Mark Kamen's original story, with the help of John Gatins. The film stars Jaden Smith, Jackie Chan and Taraji P. Henson. It tells the story of a young boy who moves to China with his mother to live with his father for the first time in his life. He has been inspired by kung fu movies from an early age and aspires to learn kung fu himself against all odds as part of what proves to be an eventful process of settling into a new country as an outsider that looks different from any other people around him at school or work... In Beijing, China, 12-year-old Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) is at the airport with his mother Nicole (Taraji P. Henson), as they prepare to leave for their new life in China as she pursues her career as a concert pianist. She is going there to live with her husband Li Xuan (Wen Zhang), who is a translator and speaks English, unlike most people of China. Mr. Parker is a widower and has not been part of Dre's life since he was about six years old, due to the fact that he had been too busy with his work of translating Chinese poetry. After arriving in Beijing, they realize that Mr. Parker requests that they leave Beijing in a month, in a diplomatic manner. They also meet Mr. Parker's assistant, Mei Ying (Zhang Ziyi), who takes them to their new home. Mr. Parker meets them and is upset that they are leaving so soon; he had called ahead hoping to rectify the misunderstanding, but his call did not get through in time. He reveals that he does not speak English and despite his loneliness he wanted to make sure to motivate his son into learning the language instead of it being neglected like it was in the past; thus leading to their current misunderstandings and eventual departure. Dre and Nicole leave without speaking to him again (except for an apology). They run into Mei Ying who takes them to a nice restaurant and buys them a meal. She suggests that Dre challenge senior students at the local dojo because it's the custom for a new student to challenge anyone who seems willing to accept it. At school, Dre is pressured into an unfair fight against three bullies in the bathroom, but his training kicks in and he fights back against two of them. The last one threatens to get help, so Dre kicks him in the head, giving him a concussion and breaks his arm. This gains him respect from both faculty and students. Dre is also very popular with the ladies, which is something that makes him nervous. That night, Li Xuan introduces Dre to his friend Mr. Jin (Michael Peña), who takes them to a kung fu school. There, Dre has his first lesson with master Po (Jackie Chan) and he quickly shows his skills. Po tells him that where he comes from in the United States there are many people trying to learn kung fu in order to become ninjas or martial artists, but he has already achieved the highest level in the country so all he has to do is improve his martial art instead of becoming another ninja. Another chance encounter at a subway station happens when Dre bumps into Mei Ying again. cfa1e77820
